How It All Started
"I grew up in Ashanti New Town — where culture was not something we studied, but something we lived every day."
— Louisa Akua Pokuaa Appiah, Founder
Growing up in Kumasi
Culture was something we lived
Years later, after relocating abroad, something began to feel different. I noticed how easily culture can fade — especially for children growing up far from home. I met young people who could no longer speak our local dialect or fully connect with the traditions that once felt so alive. It made me realise how fragile identity can become when families move across borders.
When Home Feels Far Away
Watching culture begin to fade
I grew up in Ashanti New Town, popularly known as Ash-Town, a proud neighbourhood in Kumasi — the heart of the Ashanti Region — where culture was not something we studied, but something we lived every day. From family gatherings filled with laughter and storytelling to the rhythms of traditional celebrations, heritage was woven into every part of community life.
The turning point
A puzzle in Martha's Vineyard
The turning point came unexpectedly during a visit to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. One evening, while visiting the Fisher family, a puzzle was brought out that beautifully illustrated the local town. As we sat together assembling the pieces, I watched how it did more than entertain.
It told a story.
It sparked conversation.
It created connection.
It wasn't just a game.
In that moment, an idea was born. If a puzzle could capture the spirit of a small island, we could do the same for Ghana.
The brand is born
Discover Ghana Puzzles
Discover Ghana Puzzles was born from that realisation — to celebrate our culture, educate future generations, and reconnect families both at home and across the diaspora. Each puzzle is more than a game. It is a bridge to heritage. A reminder of where we come from. A way to ensure our stories continue to live on — piece by piece, generation after generation.
What we stand for
The values behind every piece
Rooted in Heritage
We go back to bring our stories forward
"It is not taboo to go back for what you forgot or left behind"
Sankofa is the bird that looks backward while moving forward — the perfect symbol for a brand built on preserving the past for the future. It is also the most recognised Adinkra symbol in the diaspora, deeply meaningful to Ghanaians abroad reconnecting with home.
Celebrating Culture
Every piece is a window into Ghanaian life
"Except for God" — supreme, omnipresent, all-encompassing
Gye Nyame is the most recognised Adinkra symbol in Ghana — found on the 200 cedi note, on buildings, and worn at ceremonies. Using it here says that culture, like God, is everywhere and all-encompassing. It also directly connects to the Gye Nyame symbol already in Louisa’s logo.
Built to Last
Premium quality, lifetime stories
"Ram's Horns" — strength in body, mind and soul, coupled with humility
Dwennimmen represents the strength of the ram — powerful yet humble. For a puzzle brand, it speaks to the durability and quality of every product, and the quiet confidence of a brand that lets its work speak for itself. It also features in the University of Ghana’s logo — a symbol of enduring excellence.
