Kumasi & Ashanti Region — The Royal Heart of Ghana

Adinkrahene: King of Adinkra — Authority

The opening story

"Kumasi is not just a city. It is a feeling — a pride that lives in the chest of every Ashanti person, no matter where in the world they find themselves."

Founded in the late 17th century by Osei Tutu I, the first Asantehene, Kumasi has stood for over three centuries as the spiritual and cultural capital of the Ashanti Kingdom — one of the most powerful and sophisticated kingdoms in West African history.

Known as the Garden City for its lush green streets and tropical beauty, Kumasi is home to the Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asantehene, and the legendary Golden Stool — the Sika Dwa Kofi — said to have descended from the heavens and to hold the soul of the entire Ashanti nation.

Cultural deep dive

Kente — The Royal Cloth

Born in Ashanti, Kente cloth is one of the world’s most recognisable and meaningful textiles. Each colour and pattern carries deep significance  gold for royalty and wealth, green for growth and renewal, red for sacrifice and struggle. To wear Kente is to carry history on your shoulders.

The Akwasidae Festival

Every six weeks, the Asantehene holds court at Manhyia Palace for Akwasidae — one of Ghana’s most spectacular traditional festivals. Chiefs arrive in full regalia, drummers fill the air, and the Golden Stool is venerated. It is a living ceremony that has continued for centuries.

Kejetia Market

One of West Africa’s largest markets, Kejetia is the beating pulse of Kumasi — a labyrinth of colour, sound, and commerce where traders from across the region converge. It is chaotic, beautiful, and entirely alive.

Adinkra Origins

Adinkra symbols — the visual language of the Akan people — were born in the Ashanti Region. Originally stamped onto funeral cloth, they now appear everywhere as a living system of meaning, identity, and pride. Every Discover Ghana puzzle carries their legacy.

Why this symbol?

The symbol chosen for this collection

The Adinkrahene — King of all Adinkra symbols — is the only symbol that inspired all others. Its concentric circles radiate outward like the influence of Kumasi itself, a city whose cultural gravity extends far beyond its borders into the Ghanaian diaspora worldwide.

Choosing this symbol for the Kumasi collection was not a difficult decision. When a city holds the soul of a nation’s culture in its streets and palaces, only the king of symbols will do.
